The final session of THATCamp GTA discussed DiSc: Digital Scholarship GTA, a website for networking and information sharing amongst people involved in Digital Scholarship in the GTA.

In this session, we discussed possible collaboration with DH Commons, a hub for connecting people with projects and the tools that enable them. The website will be launching soon, and you can sign up to be a beta tester.

DH Plenary and Sessions at the Canadian Women Writers Conference

Bethany Nowviskie, Director of Digital Research & Scholarship at the University of Virginia Library, is giving the opening plenary at the Canadian Women Writers Conference, Ryerson University, on Thursday 27 October, from 7:15 to 8:30 PM. The plenary is entitled “How to Play with Maps”.

The Conference will also be hosting a number of Digital Humanities-related sessions: Digital Geographies and Digital Collaboration I & II.

The conference takes place from 27 to 29 October 2011, at Heaslip House, 7th floor, 297 Victoria Street. It is being sponsored by the Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory.

We would like to know what sessions Campers at THATCamp GTA are interested in participating in! Do not prepare a paper or presentation. Plan instead to have a conversation, to get some work done, or to have fun.

You can now propose a session idea by clicking the Propose a Session! link here or on the schedule page. On the poposal form you will also find some examples of session genres and sample sessions from other THATCamps. Get proposing, Campers!

Only 15 spots remain for THATCamp GTA, so if you want to attend, be sure to apply now! If you have already applied, then you are registered to attend.

We thank everyone for their interest in attending this year’s BootCamps, but they are now full and registration is for the THATCamp only.

Unfortunately, the OCADU BootCamp has been cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience for those who wished to attend. All those who applied for the bootcamps will be notified soon of which bootcamp they are attending. Thank you.

October is turning out to be Digitalapalooza in Toronto! Besides THATCamp GTA on the 21st-22nd and the Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory “Space/Place/Play” conference on the 27th-29th, Digifest, Toronto’s international festival celebrating innovation and digital creativity, will be on from the 26th to the 30th!

UOIT BootCamp revised

Please see the BootCamps page for a revision to the UOIT offering. Professor Christopher Collins will be joined by Dr Tess Pierce of the Digital Life Research Group and John Fentum of Resolution Research, who will lead a session on cloud-based data-processing and analytical tool, reLogic.

Ryerson to host Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory

DHers take note: The week after THATCamp, Ryerson University will be hosting the Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory’s Canadian Women Writers Conference from the 27th to 29th of October 2011. CWRC is “an online infrastructure project designed to enable unprecedented avenues for studying the words that most move people in and about Canada”. The conference, sponsored in part by the Centre for Digital Humanities, will feature three keynote speakers: poet Dionne Brand, who recently was awarded the Griffin Prize for her book Ossuaries; Lori Saint-Martin, award-winning author, translator, and UQAM professor, and Bethany Nowviskie, Director of Digital Research and Scholarship at the University of Virginia Library.

The conference theme is “Space / Place / Play” and papers will illuminate the vast diversity of Canadian women’s writing, past and present, in all genres and formats (printed text, manuscripts, journalism, screenwriting, graphic novels, songs, music, performance art, artists’ books), of all cultures, regions, and linguistic groups. As conference organizer Ruth Panofsky, Professor in the Department of English at Ryerson, observes, “the event will capture this dynamic moment in digital humanities scholarship where its application moves beyond archival recuperation to explore as well the possibilities of experiential play and digital topography as new modes of research into Canadian women’s writing. THATCamp GTA is delighted to announce that ThingTank will be holding a Special THATCamp GTA IdeaJam on:

The role of making and prototyping for digital humanities

An IdeaJam is an informal brainstorm around ideas (at any state of
completion) that require some extra love and sharing of expertise. If
you have an idea that you need help with, come pitch it at our
bi-monthly events. This is no Dragon’s Den or Shark Tank! Idea Jams are
informal get-togethers with just enough structure to make sure that you
get something of value out of coming.

ThingTank will be hosting a special IdeaJam for THATCamp on the topic of
making, prototyping and the digital humanities. Interested in exploring
the connections between these topics? Come jam with us!

A new networking platform: GTA Digital Scholarship (DiSc)

The final session of THATCamp GTA will focus on DiSc (Digital Scholarship). DiSc is a grassroots, faculty- and student-run online forum for the sharing of news, ideas, and expertise related to all aspects of digital scholarship in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and beyond. We encourage everyone to visit the site, create a profile, tell us about projects you are involved in, and come to THATCamp GTA with ideas about how DiSc can be useful to you!

Announcing THATCamp GTA!

THATCamp GTA is being co-sponsored by four universities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA): the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU), Ryerson University (RU), the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), and the University of Toronto (UT). THATCamp GTA will take place at Ryerson University on Saturday, 22 October 2011. Various Bootcamps will take place at each of the sponsoring universities on Friday, 21 October 2011.
